So this is my first blog! I’m so excited to give this a go. Bear with me as I learn to build my website. This has been an experience for sure, but I’m a fast learner so it shouldn’t be too painful. Let me start by introducing myself properly. I currently reside in Lillington, NC with my husband, Chris, my two sons, Camron and Adam, and my 3 dogs, Rosco, Bugsy, and Luna. Chris and I own a Siding and Window company, which keeps us very busy. We have a vacation home in Bakersville, NC (near Spruce Pine, NC) and this serves as my home base when I finally get the time to go work on shooting new images.
Why do I choose to make the Blue Ridge Mountains my home base for shooting (especially since it’s such a log journey for me)? All I can say is that it is the only place I can truly breathe, even though the views are breathtaking. You can visit the same spot over and over and never tire of it as the view changes dynamically with the light. I suppose my obsession with the area began as a child, as my parents have always loved the area as well, and took my sister and I there on numerous vacations. I don’t think I developed a true appreciation for the area until well into my adult years. I guess I didn’t need the “escape” until then. But now it is my favorite escape, a place of refuge from the fast pace of business ownership and the stress associated with it. And a great place for me to work on my photography skills while enjoying the peace that the area provides me.
My obsession with photography began many years ago as well. It started when my Dad purchased a “top of the line” (at the time) 35mm film camera when I was a teenager in Salisbury, NC. I was astonished at the quality of the prints when they were finally developed. I have always enjoyed figuring things out, puzzles if you will. I have this need to understand how and why things work. Therefore, once I was financially able, I decided to finally start learning how to use this tool to attempt to recreate the beauty I could see with my eyes. I started reading, reading, reading and attending workshops. I think I’ve come a long way but I am still learning. I have made some wonderful new friends along the way, and I still learn something new each time I am able to meet up with them! That’s the beauty of this type of art, the tools and techniques change constantly. There’s always something to learn!
I have recently started expanding into the world of portraiture. While it is a bit more challenging for me, I am enjoying learning new techniques. Lighting is a challenge, but I am starting to get the hang of it. However, I still prefer to shoot in natural light, if at all possible…not as much gear to lug around!
I hope this blog provides a small peek into why I love the art of photography. I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy producing it! 🙂
